On Saturday I had the best experience. I got to go to Adelaide Zoo and "feed" the meerkats. I use term feed lightly, really they just jumped all over us and ate food from our laps. There is a beautiful white meerkat at Adelaide Zoo; she has a skin condition which caused her to lose pigmentation. There is no denying she is a meerkat - she is just a little quirky, unique, and slightly different from the other meerkat's.
So often, instead of celebrating our differences and quirks, we try to hide them. We don't want people to think that we are weird or odd, so we try to fit in. I feel like the world needs more of us to actually embrace our quirkiness. We need to actually be who we are without shame and fear and just own it.
There is only one of you, did it ever occur to you that the things you are trying to hide away might serve a purpose? Maybe you embracing that part of yourself can light the way for someone else and show them that It is definitely ok to not be one of the crowd.
I have talked about my epilepsy before in my blogs. For a long time, I didn't like to talk about it. Seizures are embarrassing, I can't remember anything after them and they are scary. About eighteen months ago I realised, like it or not, they are part of me. From the actual seizure to the headaches and vagueness that come with the medication they are part of my make up. Perhaps if I talk about it and share my journey, I can help someone else struggling with the same thing.
It doesn't have to be a medical condition, it could be anything. We all have things that make us uniquely us. It's about time that instead of hiding them we started embracing who we are and who God made us to be. Only one person is capable of being uniquely you.
